William Bill Schroer, 75, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2015, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Newark.
Bill was a social studies teacher of 32 years. In his first four years at Kenton City Schools, he met and married fellow teacher, Sandy. Their two-week honeymoon was spent at a doubleheader in Cleveland, the Poconos, and a doubleheader in the Bronx. Two years later, he and Sandy took a second honeymoon and toured Europe in a rented Renault and canvas tent. In the summer of 1968, the couple moved to Lancaster, purchased their first home and his prized 1968 Buick Skylark convertible. During the next 28 years at Lancaster High School, he loved teaching his students and was extremely proud of creating the Humanities/History Seminar. After 1997, in retirement, he became involved in many activities at the First Presbyterian Church, singing in two choirs, serving as a deacon and liturgist, and organizing the church softball team.
He graduated from Upper Sandusky High School in 1958 and Heidelberg College in 1962. He spent his junior year at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. His hitchhiking trip through Europe provided many embellished stories, which he loved to share. His wry sense of humor will be fondly remembered as well as his signature sayings, like his popular one-liners: Good flick, good flick Take the rest of the day off and no fair cheatn
Students recall him rolling his tie during class, riding his bike to school, and inserting jokes within his tests. Above all we will remember him for being a great dad and for 50 fascinating years of marriage. We are glad we did it!
Bill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sandra Schroer; daughter, Stephanie Suzanne (Alex Maurice) Schroer; siblings, Sally Farnholtz, Raymond (Kathy) Schroer, and Susan (Steve) Woolwine; sister-in-law, Mary (Bill) Mirick; brother-in-law, John (Martha) Noecker; nieces and nephews, Doug (Lisa) Farnholtz, Donna (Mike) Neibauer, Shannon (Carl) Evenstad, Rob (Shelly) Sikma, Jennifer (Tim) Kitchen, Andrew (Megan) Woolwine, Jonathan Mirick, Paul (Julie) Mirick, Molly (Danny) Levenson, Robert (Georgette) Noecker, Sarah Collier, Allee Costello, Tim Noecker, and Joe Noecker; 44 great nieces and nephews; and 5 great-greats.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Clem and Beulah Schroer; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Francis and Elizabeth Noecker; niece, Ann Manning; Aunt Trudie Noecker; and brother-in-law, Bob Farnholtz.
