Thomas F. Gill of Baltimore, Ohio was born on December 6, 1927 in Lancaster, Ohio and passed away on Friday, May, 20, 2016 at the Pickering House. He was the son of the late Gertrude and Frank Gill and son-in-law, to the late Earl and Elsie Dauterman.
He was a graduate of Lancaster High School Class of 1948, serving in the US Merchant Marines, US Navy and US Army with active duty, traveling the world twice. After serving in the military he worked at Anchor Hocking Glass Corp. as a journeyman machinist, where he continued to work for 39 years. After he retired form Anchor Hocking Glass Corp. he continued his education at the University of Toledo and went on to teach at Nelsonville, Delaware and High Point High Schools. In Tom’s words, “Teaching was the most fun and rewarding years of my life!” After retirement from education, Tom drove for the Salvation Army, which was “very educational and rewarding to care for people”. His passions were going to Golden Gales Football games and tailgating at games with friends. He was an avid follower and fan of the Buckeyes and he passed the time by watching the Cleveland Browns.
He was a member of The Gathering, Knights of Columbus, Baltimore VFW Post 3761 and American Legion Post 11.
Tom was married to Phylis (Dauterman) for 66 years, going on 67 cherished years of marriage. He was blessed with 3 children, Dawn Groghan, Debbie (Keith) Dorst and Pastor Tom (Nikole) Gill; his treasured 16 grandchildren, John (Amanda) Hilliard, Paul (Nancy) Watson, George (Lucy) Watson, Jessica Dorst, Hope, Amber, Joy, Bethany, David, Rachel, Ramah, Jonathan, and Thomas Gill; his treasured 8 great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Johnny Hilliard, Keira Watson, Cable, Kenny, Travis, Talon, and Elara Watson. Tom dearly loved his family, including brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim (Ann) Dauterman, Earl (Sandy) Dauterman and Sonia Smith, nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Micah Gill, son-in-law, Al Groghan , sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Margie and Lawrence Sheets and Robert Dauterman.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. in the JOHNSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 207 S. MAIN ST., BALTIMORE, OHIO 43105 with Pastor Thomas E. Gill officiating. Burial will follow in Carroll Cemetery. Friends may visit Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
