Theodore Raymond Shaeffer (Ted), 81 of Lancaster passed away Monday February 20, 2017 at Fairfield Medical Center.

Born to the late Harvey Howard and Gladys Mae Calton Shaeffer on October 2, 1935, Ted attended and graduated from Amanda High School, served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army and went on to get a Technical degree in Criminal Science from Hocking Technical School. He applied his skills teaching at the Lancaster Police Academy.

Retiring from the Lancaster Police Department with over 30 years of service, he remained very active (as long as his health would permit) as a Shriner since 1967, and remains in good standing. Being a loyal member of Blue Lodge 57, Royal Jesters Court #8, past president of the local Tarhe Shrine Club, member of Provost Unit of the Aladdin Shrine and was awarded the Membership Jewel in 2006 and 2010. Ted was also a member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

Ted is survived by his loving wife of nearly 50 years JoAnn, dedicated daughter Deborah (Jon) Monger, his only grandsons Nicholas A. Mast and Christopher C. Mast and fiancé Jennifer Radelet, two sisters, Virginia A. Chrismer of Utah and Barbara L. (Charles Kermit) Hommell of Kettering Ohio, and many nieces and nephews.

One of 8 children, Ted was predeceased by Robert H. Shaeffer, Betty Mae Shaeffer Bell, James R. Shaeffer, Donald David Shaeffer and Frederick Shaeffer.

Known as a deliberate and dedicated officer, his compassion for the law will prevail with his legacy. He will be remembered for his passion for John Wayne movies, which he shared with his only grandsons who were the ultimate light of his life.

In lieu of flowers, tokens of remembrance can be made to the Officer Brett Markwood Scholarship Fund to enable students to attend a Police Academy or law enforcement training. Donations can be sent to the Fairfield County Foundation, 162 E. Main Street, Lancaster, Oh.

Friends may call from 2 – 4 p.m. Thursday February 23 at the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home Lancaster OH. A Masonic Rose Ceremony will take place at 4:00 pm. with a memorial service following, conducted by Aladdin Shrine Chaplain, Dee Mowry. Caring cremation and burial will be in Shaeffer family plot at Forest Rose Cemetery at later date.
