Robert A. Nicholson 63 of Lancaster, Ohio passed away Thursday, April 7, 2011 after an extended illness. He was born in Muncie, Indiana on July 25, 1947 and was the son of Robert W. and Elsie T. (Alexander) Nicholson.
Upon graduating from Muncie Southside High School, Robert obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Ball State University and a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Ohio University. He received considerable additional training throughout his professional career and obtained several certifications, including certified public Accountant (CPA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and Certified In Financial Forensics (CFF). Robert was a member of various professional associations, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
After becoming a certified Public Accountant, Robert worked for Ernst & Ernst (now Ernst & Young) in Indianapolis and for Deloitte, Haskins & Sells (now Deloitte) in Columbus, Ohio. He was employed for many years in various management positions at American Electric Power (AEP) in Columbus, Ohio. After retiring from AEP, he engaged in a variety of business ventures and also co-authored a book. In recent years, he enjoyed performing forensic accounting for private and public entities. He also performed accounting functions and provided business management support for the Fair Avenue Veterinary Clinic in Lancaster, Ohio, that has been operated by his wife, Loretta, for over thirty years.
Robert and his family attended the First United Methodist Church in Lancaster. He enjoyed being in a natural setting and spent considerable time over the years walking woodland trails throughout Ohio and surrounding states with his wife. Robert also enjoyed caring for their home and observing the many animals occupying the property. He enjoyed reading, observing a wide range of spectator sports and he enjoyed engaging in lively discussions about topics that interested him. Spending time with his daughter and young grandson brought him tremendous joy.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Judy Nicholson, who resided in Muncie, Indiana. His survivors include his wife of 41 years, Dr. Loretta Nicholson, DVM, daughter, Laura Nicholson and grandson Victor Nicholson who reside in Lancaster, Ohio. He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters; Lee Nicholson (wife Jean) from Muncie, Indiana, Frank Staley (wife Karen) from Monticello, Kentucky, Jane (Staley) Smith (husband Lawrence) from Louisville, Kentucky, and Mary (Staley, Casada) Meador (husband Joe) from Somerset, Kentucky. His survivors also include his brother-in-law Jerry Wilson (wife Susan) from Yorktown, Indiana, his mother-in-law Nelva Wilson residing in Columbus, Ohio, a few aunts and uncles and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 405 N. COLUMBUS ST., LANCASTER, OHIO 43130 with Rev. Robert McDowell officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens at the convenience of the family. Friends may visit Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home and 1 hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
