Robert “Bob” E. Black 97 of Lancaster, Ohio passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at the Pickering House. He graduated from Lancaster High School Class of 1944. Bob attended Ohio University for 2 years then joined the US Army and was honorably discharged on December 13, 1946. He worked for Anchor Hocking Corp. and retired from the US Post Office after 21 years of service. Bob was also co-owner of 20th Century Bowling Alley from 1967-1977. In later years Bob worked for Risch Drug Store as a delivery driver.
He was a member of F.O.E. Aries #2120 and the American Legion Post #11 each since 1964.
Bob’s hobbies were golfing, bowling, hunting, mushroom hunting, crossword puzzles, reading, turtle fishing with his brother Dick and friends and, especially bottle hunting with his son Jamie. He regularly helped and directed the American Legion fish fries and, for many years, prepared, served coffee and, solved world problems with friends, at the Risch Drug Store coffee counter.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley; children, Tom (Donna) Black of Columbus, Bobbi Black, Becky (Keith) Jones, Jamie (Laurie) Black and Bill (Amy) Black all of Lancaster; step-sons, Mike (Peggie) Griffin and Chris (Holly) Griffin all of Lancaster and Rick (Lori) Griffin of Zanesville; grandchildren, Kellie (Damien) Boyden of Lancaster, Michelle (Jonathan) Winner of Coldwater, OH, Ryan (Tyler Siefring) Griffin of Indianapolis, IN, Katherine (Justin) Bruce of Lancaster, Maria Griffin of Bellechase, LA, Dianna (Chris) Gladyk of Lancaster, D.J. Griffin of Reynoldsburg, Raymond (Lara) Black of Austin, TX, Melissa (Jimmy) Pinel of Columbus, Beth (Aaron) Songer of Reynoldsburg, Tammy Eslich, Gary Souders, and Josh (Lindsey) Jones all of Lancaster, Carrie (Lonnie) Kosch of Carroll, Colin Black of Monroe, MI, Corey (Kaylie) Black of Lancaster, Cody Black of Cincinnati, Kendall Black of Lancaster, Andrew Griffin and David Griffin all of Columbus, Elizabeth Shipley of Lancaster and 33 great grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lou Black, parents, Chester and Evon Black, brothers, Richard, Carl, and Charles Black, grandchildren, Kyle Souders and Chris Griffin and a great grandson, Seth Eslich.
Our family would like to thank the staffs at Crestview (Lux) Nursing Home, and especially FMC, and The Pickering House for their caring and professionalism towards Bob.
Caring Cremation® has taken place by the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, LANCASTER, OHIO. A graveside service will be held Friday, January 26 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Forest Rose Cemetery. The Lancaster Veterans Burial Detail will conduct military rites at the cemetery.
