Richard R. Shull 93 of Lancaster, Ohio former resident of Sugar Grove, Ohio passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Fairfield Medical Center.
He was born on September 21, 1923 to the Late Elmer and Esther Shull in Sugar Grove. Richard was a graduate of Berne Union High School Class of 1943.
He was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church and married Lila Sheets in 1944 and was married 65 years. They had 2 children, Pam Patterson and Teri Kutsko. He was a World War II US Army veteran where he served in the anti-aircraft unit.
He was a volunteer fireman in the 1950’s (he worked at the 4th of July celebration when it first started). He worked at a gas station for 4 years then co owned it for 4 years which was near Columbia Gas and Rt. 33. Richard later worked at Columbia Gas in the garage as a mechanic from 1954-1985. The last 4 years he was the garage supervisor over the Southern Division. He traveled to Portugal, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Hawaii and Canada. He retired after 24 years of service. Richard was vice president and then president of the Berne Union Alumni Banquet.
Richard was a hard worker, good husband, father and neighbor. He was always willing to lend a hand to help others, cared about the Village of Sugar Grove and was always friendly to everyone. Richard has actually resided in Sugar Grove longer than any other person who presently lives in Sugar Grove at this time.
He married Betty Kruse on August 3, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sugar Grove, Ohio and then moved to Lancaster, Ohio to live happily with her for the next 6 years. There he became an active member of Olivedale Senior Citizens Center.
Richard is survived by his wife, Betty; 2 daughters, Pam (Elmer) Patterson and Teri Kutsko; grandchildren, Ben, Clare and Megan Kutsko; step-brothers and step-sister, Charles Schmelzer, Ambrose Schmelzer, Marcella (Richard) Waits.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, grandson, Ricky Gene Thimmes and son-in-law, Joseph Kutsko.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 405 N. COLUMBUS ST., LANCASTER, OHIO 43130 with Rev. Fr. James Walter as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Stukey Cemetery with the Lancaster Veterans Burial Detail conducting military rites at the cemetery. Friends may visit Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
