Richard E. Miller, 82, of Circleville, Ohio went to heaven on Friday, April 18, 2014. He was born on March 2, 1932 in Brice, Ohio to the late Raymond and Leona Miller.
He precedes his parents, his son, Charles, and siblings; Raymond (Junior), Charles, Blanche, Neil, and Shirley.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara (Shumaker), children, Cathy (Dan) Trimmer of Baltimore, Cynthia (Gary) Kohler of Canal Winchester, Curtis (Gail) Miller of Marysville, Cheri (Kevin) Farmer of Stoutsville, Christopher and Craig Miller of Circleville and Chad Miller of Columbus; Grandchildren, Richard and Tiffany Kohler, Devon Trimmer, Jennifer and Dakota Farmer, Kyle and Britney Miller and Ryan Miller; great-grandchildren, Riley Miller, Keaton and Kenzlee Miller, and Keeli Kohler; brother, Harold Miller of Carroll and many nieces and nephews; childhood friends OB Hartman, Dick McCollister, Bob Ripley and Charlie Taylor.
Richard was an honor student and exceptional athlete at Groveport High School (Madison Twp.) where he played football, basketball, baseball, and track earning 15 varsity letters. He graduated in 1950 and then attended The Ohio State University where he played football, baseball, and wrestled during his freshman year.
In 1951, he married the love of his life, Barbara Shumaker. He spent much of his life farming in the Fairfield County area where he raised eight children. In his later years, he worked at Pine Hill Golf Course and Hersh Packing & Rubber Company until he retired on a small farm in Pickaway County, where he enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in many sports. He was an avid OSU Buckeye, Cincinnati Reds and Bengals fan. We always knew Dad would be watching the Buckeyes on Saturdays, Bengals on Sundays or listening to the Reds.
We wish to thank Mt. Carmel-West and the Palliative Care Unit and the many friends that visited.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peters Lutheran Church with Rev. Diana Gugel officiating. Burial will follow at Carroll Cemetery, Carroll, Ohio. Family and Friends may visit Monday, 4-8 p.m. at the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 405 N. COLUMBUS ST., LANCASTER, OH 43130 and 1 Hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Saltcreek-Tarlton EMS or Pickaway Township EMS in Pickaway County, Mount Carmel West Palliative Unit, St. Peters Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice in Richard’s honor.
