Richard Paul Ellwood, 89, of Lancaster, Ohio passed away on April 26, 2018. Richard was born on February 5, 1929 in Dover, Ohio to the late Virgil and Emma Ellwood. Richard’s older brother William welcomed him to the family, and in time brothers Franklin and Thomas joined the family. Richard graduated from Dover High School in 1947 and The Ohio State University in 1951. During his high school days, Richard was a member of Dover High’s football, basketball, and track teams. Richard was thankful for being offered a football scholarship, so he could attend college. While a student at Ohio State University, Richard was a member of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team and Sigma Chi Fraternity. Richard was proud to play football for Ohio State, with playing in the 1949 Rose Bowl and 1950 Snow Bowl being two of his most memorable games during his years as an OSU Buckeye. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in business administration, Richard served as an officer in the United States Navy and was assigned to two aircraft carriers and destroyers, including the USS Eversole. Richard was honorably discharged in 1954. Upon discharge, Richard began his career as a salesman for Anchor Hocking Corporation. Richard remained with Anchor Hocking for thirty-three years and retired as Senior Vice President. While employed at Anchor Hocking, Richard served as the Director and President of the National Housewares Association and he earned a Certification in Management Development through Northeastern University. After retirement, Richard started Brokankip Farm which raced Standardbred trotters and pacers throughout the Midwest.
On December 29, 1951 Richard married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Barbara Huff. Richard and Barbara first met as first grade classmates in 1935. Together Richard and Barbara had three children, and five grandchildren, whom Richard loved very much. Son, Brock Ellwood, and his wife, Maggie, reside in Tucson, AZ. Brock and Maggie’s daughter, Sarah, resides in San Francisco, CA. and their son, Carter, resides in East Lansing, MI. Son, Kip Ellwood, resides in Cincinnati, OH. Daughter, Ann Ellwood Van Wey, resides in Tempe, AZ. Ann’s son, Cooper, resides in Phoenix, AZ. and her son, Colin, resides in Denver, CO. Richard was a devoted and loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend. In addition to his devotion to family and friends, Richard was an avid supporter, and fan, of OSU football. Richard served as an OSU football recruiter and he was a member of the Fairfield County OSU Alumni Association, the Varsity O Alumni Association, and the OSU President’s Club.
Richard and Barbara spent many winters in Tucson, AZ. and Coronado, CA., but Lancaster was home. Richard has resided in Lancaster for over fifty-five years. Richard was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the American Legion. He was a past member of the Lancaster County Club, Muirfield Country Club, The Golf Club, Fairfield Heritage Association, and Symposiarch Club. Richard was very proud to live in Lancaster and he truly cared about everyone who crossed his path.
Richard is survived by his children, his grandchildren, Sarah, Carter, Cooper, and Colin, his brother and sister-in-law Frank and Pat (Angel) Ellwood, his brother Tom Ellwood, his sister-in-laws, Mary Ann (Potschner) Ellwood and Dorothy (Huff) Pettibone, his beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his many friends.
Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-four years, Barbara, his grandson, Cole Ellwood Van Wey, and his brother, William Ellwood.
A memorial service/celebration of Richard’s life will be held on a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Richard’s memory can be made to FairHoPe Hospice, 282 Sells Road, Lancaster, Ohio 43130.
