Ralph Volkwein

March 18, 1926 — August 15, 2015

Ralph H Volkwein, age 89, passed away Saturday, August 16 at the Arbors of Carroll following a courageous battle for life. Born March 18, 1926 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Harry and Charmain Volkwein. As an airman in the Air Force he served his country in WWII. He later graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and remained in Pittsburgh until he and his wife, the late Marian Redic Volkwein, who were married July 14, 1950, moved to Lancaster, Ohio in 1986.

Ralph enjoyed reading, talking to people, taking car rides, eating out and a fine glass of wine. He also enjoyed collecting rocks from places he visited and shared that hobby with his great granddaughter Miriah Carson. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, quit wit and “offering his opinion” on most issues.

He is survived by his son, Mark (Mary Louise) Volkwein of Cranberry Twp, PA, daughters Kathy (Andy) Lukas of Lancaster, OH, Roberta of Ebensburg, PA and Donna Lee (Mike) Hibbs of Butler, PA; grandchildren Tanya Lukas- Rice, Mark W. Volkwein, Meagan Taylor and step grandson Michael Hibbs; great-grandchildren Miriah, Liliana, Delaney, Bella and Alaina, and step great grandchildren Eva and Alice. He is also survived by a niece Lynn Bevington of Lakeside, OH.
In addition to his wife who passed away in January 2009, he is preceded in death by his daughter and son-in-law Jeannie and Jim Sitar, his sister Charmain Schellman and step grandson Eric Hibbs.

In keeping with his wishes burial will be private and Caring Cremation® was handled by the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, 405 N. COLUMBUS ST., LANCASTER, OHIO 43130.

Memorial donations can be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1920 W Fair Avenue, Lancaster, OH 43130.
