R. Nelson Hicks Jr

R. Nelson Hicks Jr, 90, of Lancaster, passed away at the Fairhope Pickering House on Thursday, January 16, 2025. He was born in Philadephia on September 21, 1934, to the late R. Nelson Hicks Sr and Marguerite Fischer. Nelson married Judy Ann White on October 27, 1956, and were together for 68 years. 

Nelson retired from C.E Glass as a Plant Manager. He had numerous hobbies. He loved golfing, playing cards, and watching sports, especially ice hockey and football. Upon retirement, he began quilting for family, friends, and outreach through his church, First United Methodist making blankets for newborns at Fairfield Medical Center. Nelson and Judy were very active with their grandchildren, attending numerous sporting events and band performances. They also were winter snowbirds, staying in Ft Myers, Florida for 6 months out of the year. Nelson had many fur babies whom he loved dearly. 

Nelson is survived by his loving wife, Judy Hicks; children, Nelson (Carla) Hicks, Judy Montgomery, Jim (Jo) Hicks, Bob (Suzanne) Hicks, and Chris (Stacy) Hicks; son-in-law, Roy Bunthoff; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Catherine Diane Bunthoff; parents, Catherine and R. Nelson Hicks Sr; biological mother, Marguerite Fischer and son-in-law, Lee Montgomery.

Nelson served six years in the U.S. Air Force. 

A funeral service will take place Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at noon at the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Nikki Baker officiating. Friends and family may visit from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Lancaster.
