Pearl Eugene “Gene” Coakley, age 88, died February 19th, 2018 at his residence. He was born to the late Pearl L. and Neva K. (Mattox) Coakley on July 18th, 1929 in Groveport, Ohio. Serving 12 years in the Navy, he was a veteran of both WW II and the Korean War, spending 6 months as a POW. He was a life member and past commander of VFW Post 1380, Amvets 1985, The Fairfield Barbwire, P.O.W. and the D.A.V. He was a ship plank owner of the U.S.S. St. Paul. He worked at Anchor Hocking as a supervisor and retired after 38 years. Gene will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his daughter, Victoria (Donald Fisher) Stevens; sons, Bananto Marcia Coakley and Christopher Alan Coakley; “adopted” son, Owen (Evea) Gulick; many grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and Janice Gulick, his life partner for 30 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Green Coakley; son, Ricardo Eugene Coakley; parents; brothers, Leo, Ronald, and Gail Coakley; sisters, Ramona Beck, Wanda Whalen, and Mona Searls; grandsons, Justin Stevens and Dominic R. Coakley; and granddaughters, Kelly Marie and Treasa “Shorty” Stevens.
Caring Cremation® has taken place through the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME. A celebration of Life service will take place at a later date. Burial will take place at a later date at West Rushville Cemetery. Memorials can be made in Gene’s name to FairHoPe Hospice, 282 Sells Rd., Lancaster, OH, 43130.
