Pauline "Polly" L. Schmelzer

August 29, 1932 — September 8, 2024

Lancaster

Pauline "Polly" L. Schmelzer, a radiant person who defined warmth and kindness, was born on August 29, 1932, in Athens, Ohio. After a life illuminated with love and service, she departed this world on September 8, 2024, in Lancaster, Ohio, surrounded by the family she cherished so deeply.

Polly was an emblem of dedication and grace, beginning from her early days as a proud graduate of Athens High School in 1950. She and her beloved husband, William "Bill" Schmelzer, devoted their careers to serving the community through their work at the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home, where they were both shining examples of compassion and support for those in their time of need. Yet, Polly's most fulfilling role was undoubtedly as a homemaker, nurturer, and unconditional pillar of strength for her family. She embraced motherhood with unparalleled devotion, extending her love not only to her children but also to the children of her family members. The echo of her laughter and the warmth of her embrace became a sanctuary for all who knew her.

Polly's spirit resonated beyond her familial duties; she was a gifted singer and pianist, bringing music to life in the home. The memories of her beautiful voice mixing with the laughter of family will linger on, an eternal melody celebrating togetherness. Music was not just a hobby, but a tender thread that wove the fabric of her family life, drawing loved ones together for joyous sing-alongs and heartfelt performances.

In her leisure, Polly tended to her vibrant garden, ensuring that her beautiful flowers mirrored the love and care she poured into her family and friendships. No weekend was complete without her enthusiastic explorations at yard sales, rummage sales, and auctions, where she unearthed treasures—each find lovingly embraced as a new addition to her ever-growing collection.

Being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother were among Polly's proudest accomplishments, as she embodied the essence of nurturing, dedication, and love. Her loving ways have left an indelible mark on the hearts of those around her, creating a legacy that will be carried forth by her husband William "Bill" Schmelzer, son, Tony (Connie) Barringer, step-son, Brian Schmelzer, grandchildren, Tony Jr. (Brandie) Barringer, Troy Barringer, Trent (Nicole) Barringer, her 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Polly’s dedication to family was evident in everything she did; she would do anything for anyone, embodying the spirit of generosity and kindness. She was a mother to everyone, a testament to her loving and welcoming nature.

Polly is predeceased by her son, Donnie Barringer, her loving parents, William and Thelma Gaskins, and her siblings: Marguarite, William, Evelyn "Bobbie", Alfie, Ruby, and Junie. They await her in the embrace of eternity, where laughter and love continue to reign.

As we bid farewell to this beautiful spirit, let us remember Pauline "Polly" L. Schmelzer for her unwavering love, her musical heart, and her ability to make everyone feel like family. A viewing will take place on September 12, 2024, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM at the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home 405 N Columbus St. Lancaster, Ohio.
