Paul Mathias of Lancaster, Ohio, passed away on Monday, November 5, 2024.
Paul was born in Baltimore, Ohio, to Walter and May Kane Mathias. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1956 where he honorably served as a firefighter for 20 years. He was a life member of the Baltimore VFW Post 3761. After retiring, he enjoyed upholstery and spending time with family and friends. Paul was an avid coffee drinker and could be found most mornings enjoying a cup with his very loyal group of friends. He was honored by the City of Cambridge for his heroism while helping to save a child from a dog attack.
Paul is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sharon Van Dyke Mathias; daughter, Lisa (Martin) Nees of Wentzville, Missouri; son, Paul (Kimberly) Mathias of Baltimore, Ohio; stepson, Bryan (Laura) Bowersox of Lancaster, Ohio; stepdaughter, Kaye (Jim) Goldbach of Paoli, Pennsylvania; brother, Ronald Mathias of Spring Grove, Illinois; sisters-in-law, Shirley Mathias and Mary Mathias of Baltimore, Ohio; sister-in-law, Judy (Steve) Escue of Aiken, South Carolina; and sister-in-law, Janet Sayers of Albany, Ohio.
In addition, he has eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and May Kane Mathias; brothers, Harold, Loren, Richard, John, Jimmie and Dale Mathias; half-brother, Donald Mathias; sisters, Mable Durant, Virginia Landis, Helen Landis and Jean Webb; and brothers-in-law, Larry Van Dyke and Tony Sayers.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 PM on Saturday, November 9, 2024 in the JOHNSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 207 S Main St., Baltimore, OH 43105. Family and friends may visit from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Caring Cremation® will follow the service.
