Mary Elizabeth Gabel

Mary Elizabeth (Rannells) Gabel, 103, longtime resident of Fairfield County, died on Friday, November 28, 2014, at First Community Village in Columbus. She was born December 25, 1910, near New Plymouth, in Vinton County, Ohio, the daughter of the late David Vance and Mary Francis Longstreth Rannells.
Elizabeth was a graduate of Ohio University, where she was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha; she also graduated from the Office Training School in Columbus. For thirty years she taught in Ohio schools, beginning as a high school teacher in Laurelville and St. Clairsville, then taught elementary in Lancaster City Schools.
Elizabeth was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Elizabeth Sherman Reese Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Morgan County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society, Olivedale Senior Center, Fairfield County Retired Teachers, and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Lora Jane Randall of Lexington, Virginia; son, John Rannells Gabel of Columbus; and grandsons, Scott R. (Heather) Gabel and Sean J. Gabel; great-grandchildren, and four nephews and three nieces.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph W. Gabel; parents; sister, Florence Mahala Powell; brothers, Thomas Longstreth Rannells and Robert Longstreth Rannells; and daughter-in-law, Joan M. Gabel.
A service will be held at 11 AM Saturday in the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Matthew Richardson officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Rose Cemetery. Friends may call from 10:00AM to 11:00 AM Saturday at the funeral home.
