Lelia L. Atkinson, age 99 of Baltimore, died on April 30th, 2015 at the Pickering House. She was born in Vinton County on March 22, 1916 to the late Russell and Ethel Madison Henderson; She was a member of Fairfield Christian Church North Campus, which her family proudly donated land to. She helped work on the family farm, whether it was bailing hay or driving tractors. She kept a huge garden and was an amazing shot with her 22. Lelia was an amazing person who was strong and flexible both in body and mind, who will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her daughters, Verlene Hoffman, Sharon Seymour, and Phyllis (Steve) Ricketts; son, Melvin (Barbra) Atkinson; 10 grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother; father; and stepfather, Earnest Cornell; husband of 68 years, Clarence Atkinson; daughter, Freda Atkinson; sister, Valerie Henderson; and son-in-law, Donald Seymour.
A service will take place on Tuesday at 10:30AM at the JOHNSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME in Baltimore, officiated by Lelias unofficial adopted son, Pastor William Lavely. Burial will follow the service at Floral Hills Memory Garden. Family and Friends may call on Monday from 2PM until 4PM and 6PM until 8PM at the funeral home.
