John (Jack) "Red" Stamets, 91 of North Carolina, former resident of Lancaster, Ohio, died Wednesday, October 21, 2015. He was born and raised in Massillon, Ohio; Red was a professional musician (trumpet) and traveled with the Billy Butterfield Orchestra during the Big Band era. After settling down in Columbus, he met and married Sue, his wife of nearly 50 years. While in Columbus, he played with the Joe Dunlap New Orleans Five, the Joe Dunlap Quartet, and was an original member of Al Waslohn's band. From 1979-1994 he was with the Capital City Jazz Band. Additionally, Red served his country in WWII as part of the 9th Armored Division where he was shot by a sniper while scouting and awarded both a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Red is survived by his son and daughter-in-law John and Elizabeth and their children. He is preceded in death by Sue Stamets, his wife of nearly 50 years, his mother Goldie, father Charles and his brothers Paul and Bob.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Lancaster Veterans Burial Detail conducting military rites at the cemetery. Friends may visit Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 405 N. COLUMBUS ST., LANCASTER, OHIO 43130.
