John B. Sharritts, 91, of Lancaster, Ohio, died at Crestview Rehabilitation Center after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
He is survived by his children, Barbara (Robert) Shroder and Rev. F. Raymond (Pat) Sharritts; grandchildren, Paul (Debbie), John D., Stephen (Janet) Sharritts, Kathleen (Lee) Holmes, and Don McLaughlin; great grandchildren, Pam Sharritts, Ashley (Tom) Paul, Courtney Sharritts, Stephanie Sharritts, Aaron (Anna) and Amy Swope, Sarah Holmes, and Colin and Connor McLaughlin; great-great grandchildren, Alexander and Brandon Woltz and Rangely Paul.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Leah Sharritts; his brothers, Walter and Donald; his wife, N. Elizabeth Sharritts; and his companion, Dorothy Werner.
Mr. Sharritts was the owner of the Plaza Barber Shop in Miamisburg and provided services to a variety of nursing homes in the Dayton area. John served in the Army Air Corps in WWII. He started out as a bugler and soon ended up in the tuba section in the Army Air Corps band. His band played for President Truman in Berlin at the end of the war. He loved music. He started the community band in Miamisburg and directed it for many years.
John was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion for 60 years. He joined Minerva Lodge No. 98, Trinity Chapter No. 44, and Valley Commandery No. 80 and was honored by all three with their 50 year award. John was a member of the tuba section of the Antioch Shrine Band of Dayton, Ohio for many years.
He loved Miamisburg and was very proud to be a member of the Miamisburg Historical Society. He enjoyed choir music and he loved to sing. He directed a youth choir at St. Jacobs Lutheran Church in Miamisburg and started the choir programs at the Catholic Church in Miamisburg, Trinity United Methodist Church in Winter Haven, Florida, and the Senior Citizen Choir in Miamisburg. He used to laugh and say, “Play or sing your music loud and fast! The people will love it.”
John was a member of St. Jacobs Lutheran Church in Miamisburg. He attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Bremen.
Caring Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at Hillgrove Cemetery in Miamisburg, Ohio on Saturday, June 11th at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. F. R. Sharritts officiating.
