John Paul Butler, 85, of Lancaster, passed peacefully, with his loving family by his side on Monday, March 26, 2018.
John served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a graduate of St. Mary Catholic High School in German Village. A graduate of Capital University where he also excelled at football. He was inducted into the Capital University Football Hall of Fame and was a member of the Alumni Varsity C Association and Touchdown Club. He completed his Master of Education degree at Xavier University.
John worked for many years as a teacher and football coach at various high schools within the Columbus City School District and at Licking Heights. He also served as Vice Principal at McArthur and worked for many years with Rush Delivery Service and the Scioto Trails Swim Club.
John is survived by his children, Charla (Matt) Connors, Paula (Mark Orcutt) Corbett, Nola (Richard) Clark, Emil “Pete” Butler, and Johnny Butler; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sisters, Madeline Hicks and Dorothy Hughes; many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Betty Dell Butler; parents, Emil and Ruth Butler; and sisters, Donna Braskett and Rosemary Huston.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday at St. Mark Catholic Church, 324 Gay St, Lancaster, Ohio 43130 with Father Peter Gideon as celebrant. Burial will follow in Forest Rose Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends may visit from 2:30-6:30 PM Monday at the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME, Lancaster with a Vigil Service at 6:30 PM.
