Joan Reese Crumley, 91, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Friday, December 14, 2018, at her daughter’s home in Westerville, Ohio. She was born September 11, 1927 to the late Don B. and Opal (Metcalf) Reese. Mrs. Crumley retired from Lancaster City Schools where she had taught at Thomas Ewing, Lancaster High School, and Stanbery Freshman School and she was a Jennings Scholar. Joan was a member of Fairfield County Retired Teachers, a life member of ORTA, a life member of The Ohio State University Alumni Association, and the Fairfield County Heritage Association. She was also a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church.In retirement, Joan enjoyed traveling, tutoring children at South Elementary, and volunteering at the Sherman House Museum. Descended from a family with deep roots in Fairfield County, Joan resided in Fairfield County for most of her life.
Surviving are her children and their spouses, K. Michael and Cynthia Crumley of Springfield, Ohio, and Donald and Donna (Crumley) Woker, of Westerville, Ohio. Also surviving are five granddaughters and spouses: Amy(Crumley) and D.ScotDavidge, Jennifer(Crumley)and Joseph Vito, Laura (Woker)and Andrew Gledhill, Sarah (Woker)Kelly,and Stephanie(Crumley) and MatthewJenkins; Seven great-grandchildren:Dylan& Collin Gledhill, Sean& Logan Davidge, Madeline&Dominic Vito, and Lincoln Jenkins; her brother and her sister-in-law: Donald and Karen Reese. In addition, Joan leaves behind nieces, nephews, cousins, other dear relatives, and numerous friends.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by husband, Howard Crumley, in 1977 and by her second husband, Jack Willard, in 2013. Also preceding her in death was her sister and brother-in-law, Norma Lee (Reese) and Howard T. Lawwell, brother-in law and sister-in-law, Harold and Gladys Crumley, nephew Vincent Lawwell, all of her many aunts and uncles, as well as many other beloved family members and close friends.
The family also wishes to acknowledge Joan’s wonderful and much loved caregivers: Carol, Bruce, and Farrah, as well as countless others from Ohio Health Hospice,and her devoted aides from Options Home Services: Princess,Zainab, Emily, and Crystal.
Calling hours will take place the evening of Friday, December 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Frank Smith funeral home in Lancaster.A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday December 29, with Cheryl Foulk presiding.The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Private burial will take place at Green Mound Cemetery on Crumley Rd. at a later time.
