Janet Gilmore

March 25, 1915 — August 31, 2014

Janet McKenzie Gilmore, of Lancaster, dearly loved mother of John Gilmore (Pat) and Anne Gilmore, of Lancaster, Steven Gilmore (Cindy) of Memphis, TN, and Susan Buck (Robert) of Atlanta, GA. died on August 31, 2014, at The Inn at Fairfield Village in Lancaster. She was 99 years old.

A 60+ year resident of Lancaster, she had been an active volunteer in the community. For many years she organized the bi-monthly Red Cross Blood Bank, and served on the Board of the local Red Cross, was instrumental in starting Twig Two’s Bargain Boutique, and was its first treasurer. She was a literacy volunteer at the Lancaster Public Library, delivered Meals on Wheels to shut-ins, and served as president of Parents’ League and Froebel Club. She was a long time member of the Lancaster Country Club.

She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as one of the first female Elders, and for many years organized the making of wreaths that adorned the church windows every Christmas.

Affectionately known as Bimi to her four grandchildren Mike Gilmore (Jill), and Steve Gilmore (Cindy), of Lancaster, Kristen Gilmore of Houston, TX., and Kathryn Gohde (Steve), of Atlanta, GA., she is also survived by eight great grandchildren, Spencer, Harrison, Alec, Anna, and Amelia Gilmore, Cade DeLaGarza, and Robert and Madelyn Gohde, as well as nieces and nephews.

A 1937 graduate of Wittenberg University where she met her husband Hugh, who preceded her in death in 1999, she was an 80+ year member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority.

The Gilmore family is most appreciative to FairHoPe Hospice and their dedicated, loving volunteers, as well as the staff at the Inn at Fairfield Village, for their compassionate care.

A private interment service is planned.

Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, or FairHoPe Hospice, in Janet’s memory.

Arrangements by the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home, Lancaster.
