James B. Walter

James B. Walter, a great electrician and longstanding employee of the Columbus Dispatch, passed away on June 20, 2024. Born on March 7, 1938, to the late Fred and Garnet Bryan Walter, James led a life filled with cherished memories and remarkable accomplishments. His career as an electrician was marked by dedication and a keen problem-solving ability. James took immense pride in his work at Columbus Dispatch, where he made many lasting friendships. His commitment to his craft was evident to all who knew him. Aside from his professional achievements, James will be remembered for his passion for preserving history and bridges as a founding member of the Fairfield County Covered Bridge Society. He shared this love with his family, who fondly remember working alongside him and learning from his wealth of knowledge. A graduate of Lancaster High School, James excelled both academically and athletically. As a talented runner in track, he left a lasting impact on his teammates and coaches. In addition to his career and education, James proudly served in the US Army. His dedication to his country reflected his strong sense of duty and honor. Outside of work and service, James had a love for organ music and classical tunes. These hobbies brought him moments of joy and relaxation throughout his life. James was a charismatic individual known for his talkative nature and welcoming spirit. He never shied away from striking up a conversation with anyone he met, yet remained steadfast in his beliefs and values. Among his proudest accomplishments were  first and foremost his close-knit family and then his involvement with the Fairfield County Covered Bridge Society where he donated and helped move the McCleery-Walter bridge to the Fairfield Heritage Trail Association for the Lancaster bike trail.  James held these relationships dear to his heart, nurturing them with love and care over the years.

James is survived by his children, Dr. John (Julie) Walter, Jason (Kelly) Walter, Joel (Leah) Walter, and Jessica (Mark Easter) Walter; grandchildren Jamie (Joseph Woodall) Walter, Jacob (Maddie Savage) Walter, George Walter, and Emily Walter; as well as several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Jane M. Walter; siblings Jan, Carolyn, Shirley, and John.
