Jack Andrew Van Dine Jr., a compelling man with chutzpah and heart, finished the race strong on December 9, 2016, and then took his rest. He was 61.
He was born Nov. 11, 1955, to Mary Louise Chapman and Jack Van Dine Sr., both now deceased.
He is survived by his wife, Holly Harman Fackler, whom he loved fiercely and without condition; five children, Jacob Van Dine (Ronnie Lynn Fout) and Nikki Van Dine of Columbus, Elizabeth Fackler (Larry Spangler) of Baltimore, Eliot Fackler (Jennifer Stockdale) of Chicago and Evan Fackler (Rebecca Tolmach) of Seattle; grandsons Tyler, Devin and Dillon Van Dine of Columbus; five stepgrandchildren; brother Bryan (Theresa) Van Dine of Obetz; ex-wife Mary Van Dine of Columbus; parents-in-law Worth and Dorothy Harman of Baltimore; a large extended stepfamily who will sorely miss him; three sisters; and many nephews and nieces.
The first in his family to graduate high school (Liberty Union 1974), Jack worked most of his life in labor and management jobs, and retired from T. Marzetti after 28 years. He was avidly and productively involved in youth sports and coached girls basketball for many years.
After moving from Shelby to Baltimore in 2013, he joined Christ United Methodist Church, where he conducted an open gym program, volunteered at the food pantry, refereed senior chair volleyball and fried donuts for the farmers market. He loved children and catfishing.
Jack traveled light, knew his neighbors, saw the little things, invested himself in people, spent every ounce of effort he had, and left the world a bit better.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17 at Christ United Methodist Church, 700 S. Main St., where his family will receive friends starting at 10 a.m. A reception/meal will follow; don’t expect anything healthy.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Jack’s honor to the Baltimore Food Pantry or to a charity serving the needs of children.
