Gladys Louise Schaar, 87, passed away Monday, March 6, 2017 at her residence in Lancaster, Ohio.
She was born February 6, 1930 in Wainwright, Ohio and was the daughter of the late John “Duck” Swaldo Sr. and Fanny Jane Swaldo. She was married to the late William (Max) Schaar. She was a devoted wife and mother of “four perfect boys”. There was never a stranger at her house, or anywhere she travelled, only a new friend to meet. Working in a bakery as a teenager instilled a lifelong passion for cooking and baking.
Gladys was a long-time resident of Lancaster, moving from the New Philadelphia Ohio area shortly after her marriage. Her love of animals led to a menagerie over the years that included a pet groundhog, fox, and crow early in life. Her later pets included “my only girl” Fuzz (cat), and Put-Put (parakeet). She was the queen of bingo at the Senior Living Center and loved to play all manner of card games including Euchre and Canasta. She tirelessly lent a helping hand to all who needed one. She loved country music, and had an uncanny ability to recall and sing childhood songs from all generations to her grandkids was unmatched. She enjoyed wintering in Florida playing golf and spending summers with her grandchildren.
She was a member of the Mills Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by four sons: Stan (Neila), Ron (Mary), Alan (Deanna), and John (Audra); grandchildren, Emily (Jesse) Waggoner, Abigail, Logan, Dylan, Caitlin and JR Ballenger; two sisters, Grace Swaldo and Thelma (Raymond) Metzger, both of New Philadelphia; a brother, Frederick (Donna) Swaldo of Uhrichsville and sister-in-law Marilyn (Lloyd) Swaldo of New Philadelphia.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers and sister-in-law, John (Dorothy Jean) Swaldo Jr., Lloyd Swaldo, sister and brother-in-law, Beatrice (Daniel) Hutson and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Walter and Rachel Schaar.
The family wishes to thank Drs. Richard Bardales and Brian Hendrickson, as well as the staff of FairHoPe Hospice and Palliative Care and the Bickford of Lancaster for their care and support.
