Gailen Maxwell

Gailen Wayne “Max” Maxwell, 91, of Lancaster, Ohio passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at Carroll Place Senior Living. He was a beloved brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend to many. Gailen was born April 26, 1926 in Monroe Township, Perry County, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Patricia (Hillis) Maxwell, parents Daine C. Maxwell Sr. and Olive (Linscott) Maxwell, and his brother Daine C. Maxwell Jr.

Gailen is survived by his sisters, Glenna Palmer and Wanda Weddle, sisters-in-law Rosemary McCluskey and Marjorie Hillis, many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

A 1944 graduate of Corning High School, Gailen served in the Pacific during the final year of World War II with the United States Army 532nd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment. He was an auto mechanic by trade, co-owner and operator of Stapleton’s Parts and Service in Columbus for many years where he was fondly known as “Max”. Gailen was a member of many organizations through the years including the Ohio Tree Farm Committee, Ohio Forestry Association, Southeast Ohio Woodlands Interest Group and Perry County Farm Bureau. Beginning in the 1960’s, in cooperation with many groups, he was responsible for planting upwards of 250,000 trees. He and his wife Pat were selected Ohio’s Tree Farmers of the Year in 1990. An avid outdoorsman, Gailen thoroughly enjoyed the majesty of nature. He and Pat travelled to many scenic areas of the U.S.A. and Canada making repeated trips to Glacier National Park, a favorite place for them.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 405 N. COLUMBUS ST., LANCASTER, OHIO 43130 with Pastor Carolyn Hoskinson officiating. Friends may visit from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday and 1 hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will occur at a later date.
