Fredrick Nicholas Mendell, age 67, passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2016. Fred was born on September 4, 1948 in Waynesville, Missouri to the late Robert and Dora Mendell. Fred is survived by his wife of 39 years, Susan, of Lancaster; son Eric (Stacy Schoolfield) of Grand Junction, CO; and daughter Emily (Ian Healy) of Sebastopol, CA. He is also survived by mother-in-law Joan Hoerst of Cincinnati, special cousin Mary Cozzens of Ft. Collins, CO and many brothers and sisters-in-law and their families. Fred graduated from the University of Missouri at Rolla where he developed a life-long friendship with his Kappa Alpha brothers. His engineering career started with Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati. He moved to St. Louis for employment with Ralston Purina and then to Lancaster where he retired from the Ralston Foods plant in 2010.
A lover of music, Fred sang with the Maple Street Church Choir, Lancaster Community Chorus, and St. Mark’s Cantata Choir. Fred enjoyed the friendship of his Tuesday morning breakfast club and workouts at the Y, where his buddies were a source of lively conversation and support. He enjoyed traveling, especially to visit his kids and using his National Parks Pass.
A celebration of Fred’s life will be held at Maple Street United Methodist Church, 438 E. Wheeling Street, Lancaster at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, officiated by Rev. Phyllis Fetzer. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church.
