Fern Delphia Landis April 29, 1911 - November 2, 2010

Fern Delphia Landis of Baltimore, was born April 29, 1911, to William and Alpha Williams and she truly was a “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” She passed away November 02, 2010 at the age of 99.

She is survived by children, David (Rosie) Landis, Sr. and Marilyn Wooster; grandchildren, David Landis, Jr., Jim (Tammy) Landis, Tom (Laura) Landis, Debbie (Steve) Miller, Dee Ann (Tim) Leitnaker, Merrie Linn Fisher, Iris Wooster Taylor, and Paul Wooster, II; 31 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; sister, Mary Petty; brother, Billy Williams; and many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her husband of 53 years, James L. Landis; son-in-law, Paul L. Wooster, Sr.; 3 infant great-grandchildren; brothers, Fred, Ellis, Paul, Arnold, David, and Jack Williams; and sisters, Ellen Emrich and Betty Penrod.

Delphia attended Indian Run Elementary and graduated from Central High School (now Miller High School in Perry County) where she walked 4 ½ miles round trip to attend. She was a graduate of Capital Academy (now Capital University). Her first teaching assignment was at Indian Run Elementary. She later second grade teacher at Liberty Union-Thurston Local School District for 15 years.

Member of New Zion United Methodist Church where she served as church treasurer for many years, former member of the Basil Garden, Entre Nous, and Wimodaus Clubs, and Liberty Union Athletic Boosters. She faithfully attended Beech Grove Homecoming in Perry County every August, where she had her original church membership in the United Church of Christ.

For many years she worked along side of her husband as a dedicated farm wife and prepared many meals for workers at the farm. She was an avid flower gardener with a special interest in raising irises. At one time, over 75 varieties adorned her yard. A devout Christian, she inspired many in her family to follow the teachings of the Lord. Three great-grandchildren are missionaries and three great-grandchildren are teachers inspired by their great-grandmother. Delphia was an accomplished baker and her family looked forward to her assortment of Christmas cookies each holiday season. After her retirement, she crocheted many blankets for her family, especially baby blankets for great-grandchildren. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, and sister.

Very special care-givers were Casey Bader and Lexie Sanor. A sincere thanks to all individuals who lovingly volunteered their time to help with Delphia’s care over the years. Caring cremation has taken place with arrangements by Johnson-Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held November 14, 2010, at 12:30 PM at Union Evangelical Cemetery in Baltimore. Memorial services will be held at Beech Grove United Church of Christ in Perry County on November 21, 2010, at 10:00 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to Beech Grove United Church of Christ in care of Johnson-Smith Funeral Home.
