Dr. John W. Furlow, 74, of Lancaster, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014. He was born May 3, 1940, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Furlow received his Ph.D. in U.S. history at the University of North Carolina, his M.A. from the University of Michigan, and his B.A. from Middlebury College (VT). He contributed to four books, published in numerous scholarly journals, and wrote a text for independent learning.
He retired as Dean Emeritus from Ohio University-Lancaster where he also was a member of the history faculty. Prior to coming to Ohio University-Lancaster, he was Director of Academic Affairs and history professor at Penn States DuBois Campus. He also previously held full-time teaching positions at the University of North Carolina and Wilkes University (PA).
Active in many aspects of the community, Dr. Furlow was a member of the Lancaster Festival and Fairfield County Foundation boards, the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, and the Lancaster City Schools Program Development Committee. He also served on the Mt. Carmel College of Nursing Board of Trustees. He was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church. He was a loving husband, father, and proud grandfather.
John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judy Furlow; children, Dr. David (Teri) Furlow and their children, Abbi and Alex, Sam (Carla) Furlow and their daughter, Hannah, and Eliza (Dr. Ross) Peterson and their children, Jack, Will, and Kate; and several nephews and nieces.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. And Mrs. John W. Furlow, Sr.; and 2 sisters.
The funeral service will take place on Saturday, May 17, at 1 p.m. in St. Johns Episcopal Church, 134 N. Broad St. in Lancaster with Reverend William Pursley officiating. Viewing will be in the church undercroft from 10 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. preceding Saturdays service. Private entombment will be in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Donations may be made in memory of John to a charity of the donors choosing.
