Dr. Jack McGonagle

Dr. J.W. McGonagle, age 88, of Lancaster, passed away Thursday, July 5th, 2012, at Manor Care Health Services of Westerville.

He was born on Nov. 12, 1923 in New Lexington, Ohio to Judge Urban and Hazel McGonagle. He attended Xavier University and graduated from the Ohio University. He graduated from the Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He established his Optometric practice in Lancaster, OH. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ritzy Steiner McGonagle. They are survived by their five children; Michael and wife Judy and son Matthew of Lancaster, Patrick and wife Jennifer and daughter Emily and son Ryan of Upper Arlington, Timot of Chicago, IL, Molly McGonagle Lavins and husband Clancy and son Gannon and daughter Megan of Hudson, Kathleen McGonagle Misiuk and husband Tom and son Wilson and daughters Sophie and Gracie of Westerville. Jack also is survived by his second wife, Helen McGonagle of Santa Rosa, CA and her seven children.

Jack practiced Optometry for 40 years in Lancaster. He was a WWII veteran and survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Counsel 1016, the Lancaster VFW, Symposiarch, and the Ohio Optometric Association. He passed away at the age of 88 from Alzheimer’s. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s’ Association Central Ohio Chapter c/o Always Best Care Senior Services 752 N. State St., #216, Westerville, OH 43082.

A Memorial Mass will take place on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Lancaster, Ohio, officiated by Father Craig Eilerman. The Lancaster Ohio Veterans Burial Detail will conduct a military graveside service at St. Mary Cemetery following Mass. Family and friends may call at the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Caring Cremation has taken place.
