Dr. Halesh Murigeppa Patel M.D. F.A.C.P. (June 3rd 1947 - October 1st, 2018)
Beloved husband, father, poet, and doctor.
Halesh was born in Kariagnur, Karnataka, India on June 3rd 1947 to Puttanelamma (d:2003) and Murigeppa (d:1946). He is survived by his son Murali and Grandson Kiran, his son Sharath and wife Corinne, his daughter Trisha, and his beloved Kathyayini.
Halesh grew up in the Farmlands of Javalli, Shimoga, Karnataka, India surrounded by the rivers and green paddy fields of his grandparents farmlands. He received his education in government schools where he excelled. He joined Mysore Medical College as a merited student. He graduated in 1972 and published “Shudra” – Kanada Language collection of Poems. He later published “The Flow of the River” – English Language collection of Poems in 2001. He married Kathyayini Patel in 1973 and they settled in the United Kingdom where Halesh completed three years of Geriatric medicine at the Cardiff Royal Infirmary, Cardiff, Wales, UK under Dr. M.S Pathy. He traveled to the United States in 1977 to pursue a psychiatry residency in New York. In 1978, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland for a three year internal medicine residency at St. David’s hospital. He completed an additional three year residency in medical oncology at the University of Maryland and John Hopkins. In 1984, he became an oncologist and internist at the Veterans Hospital in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He started his private practice Patel Clinic in Athens, Ohio as an internist and oncologist in 1987 where he practiced until his passing.
Halesh was a skilled and compassionate physician loved by his patients and well respected by his colleagues and community. He taught medical students as an honorary professor for the Ohio University Osteopathic Medical School where he was exceptionally rated by his students and additionally served as a Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine with Ohio University from 1988-2018. Halesh received the Ohio University Outstanding Faculty Award in 1991 and was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1995. In 2003, he received the America’s Top Physicians Award from the Consumers’ Research Council. In 2016, Halesh received the Award in Recognition for 29 years of service to O’Bleness Hospital and the Athens Community from Ohio Health.
He will be deeply missed by all those he has had the fortunate to celebrate this life with.
The viewing will be held from 4-7pm on Friday October 5, 2018 at FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL AND CREMATORY, 405 N. COLUMBUS ST., LANCASTER, OHIO 43130.
