Dorothy Ellen (Love) Wood, 90, of Lancaster, Ohio went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, June 22, 2018 at Arbors at Carroll. Dorothy loved life, enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends, loved being a wife, mom, grandmother and great-grandmother but most of all loved God with all her heart, soul and mind. She will be missed but we will see her again! She was a member of Faith Memorial Church.
Dorothy was born on December 22, 1927, in Blue Valley in Hocking County, Ohio to Ora and Della Love. She was the 9th of 10 children. She was preceded in death by her parents and 8 siblings as well as her granddaughter Rachael Wood. She is survived by her husband Donald G. Wood, children Patricia (Wood) McKinney, Annette Wood, Jeff and Jerri Wood, Roger and Debbie Wood, Robert and Denise (Wood) Riffle, her sister Bette (Love) Mathias, 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy graduated from Lancaster High School in 1946 and went on to Owosso Bible College where she earned a Bachelor of Theology degree. She met her husband Donald Wood and they were married on May 27, 1949. Dorothy and Don spent several years preparing to serve as missionaries. They had 4 of their 5 children before leaving for Zambia, Africa in 1963. Their 5th child was born in Choma, Zambia, Africa in January 1964.
They served as missionaries in Africa for 5 years, returned to Lancaster, Ohio in 1969, then in December of 1975 went to serve in Papua New Guinea until 1986. Dorothy has worked as a bookkeeper, teacher, missionary and locally worked at the WHOK Radio Station. Upon retirement Dorothy and Don moved to Avon Park, Florida where they enjoyed living at the Oaks Village until 2012. Since then they resided with their son Jeff and later with Annette until they moved to Arbors at Carroll in 2016.
A Memorial Service will be held at Faith Memorial Church, June 26, 2018 at 1 p.m. with Pastors Jonathan Morgan and Mel Truex officiating. Friends and family may visit Tuesday from 11 to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be at a later date Maple Grove Cemetery in Lancaster, Ohio. Arrangements were handled by the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, 405 N. COLUMBUS ST., LANCATSER, OH 43130.
