Donald Glen Wood, 89, of Lancaster, Ohio went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 5, 2018 at the Pickering House, following his beloved wife Dorothy, just 6 weeks after her death. Don loved his family and enjoyed traveling, baseball, being a missionary and a teacher. He was a beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather but most of all loved God with all his heart, soul and mind. He will be missed but we will see him again! He was a member of Faith Memorial Church.
Donald was born on January 23, 1929, in Braman, Oklahoma to Levi and Lillie Wood. He was the youngest of the 4 children. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 siblings as well as his wife Dorothy and granddaughter Rachael Wood. He is survived by children, Patricia (Wood) McKinney, Annette Wood, Jeff and Jerri Wood, Roger and Debbie Wood, Robert and Denise (Wood) Riffle, 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Donald graduated from Northtown High School, Kansas City, Missouri in 1946 and went on to Owosso Bible College where he met Dorothy Love and they were married on May 27, 1949. He earned a Bachelor of Theology degree in 1952. Don was a Veteran who served in the US Army 1952-1953 in Korea. He later attended Michigan State University earning his Master’s Degree in Education in 1962. Dorothy and Don spent several years preparing to serve as missionaries. They had 4 of their 5 children before leaving for Zambia, Africa in 1963. Their 5th child was born in Choma, Zambia, Africa in January 1964.
They served as missionaries in Africa for 5 years, returned to Lancaster, Ohio in 1969, then in December of 1975 went to serve in Papua New Guinea until 1983. Don has worked as a pastor, teacher and missionary. Upon retirement Donald and Dorothy moved to Avon Park, Florida where they enjoyed living at the Oaks Village until 2012. Since then they resided with their son Jeff and later with Annette until they moved to Arbors at Carroll in 2016.
A Memorial Service will be held at Faith Memorial Church, August 9, 2018 at 1 p.m. with Pastors Jonathan Morgan and Mel Truex officiating. Friends and family may visit Thursday from 11 to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be at a later date in Maple Grove Cemetery in Lancaster, Ohio.
