David Lamar Straten, 89, passed away Thursday, November 1, 2018.
He retired from Anchor Hocking as a Mold Maker after 36 years of service. He served in the Korean War in 1950 and 1951 with the 1st Cavalry Division, was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with 6- Battle Stars and numerous other medals and ribbons. He was a member of the Combat Infantrymen’s Association, the 1st Cavalry Division Association and the Korean War Veterans Association. He was a Blue Lodge Master Mason for 50 plus years. David enjoyed fishing, camping, coaching basketball and cheering on The Ohio State Buckeyes. He was a member of the 6th Avenue United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years Norma Straten; as well as his parents, Harry and Lillian Straten, and brothers, Harry Straten Jr., and Paul Straten.
He is survived by his daughter and son in law, Marsha and John Hunt of Lancaster, Ohio; and his son and daughter in law, David Jr. and Cindy of Rockford, Michigan; his grandsons, Greg Helser II of Lancaster, Ohio, David Straten III of Columbus, Ohio, and Nathan Straten of Rockford, Michigan; sister in law Sandy McAfee of Greenfield, Indiana and sister and brother in law Joy and Chuck Roy of California; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation is Tuesday evening, 11/6 from 6pm to 8pm at Frank E. Smith Funeral Home, 405 N. Columbus Street, Lancaster, Ohio 43130. Funeral services are Wednesday, 11/7 at 10:30am at the 6th Avenue United Methodist Church, 1004 W. Sixth Avenue in Lancaster, Ohio with Pastor Rick Jones officiating. The Lancaster veteran burial detail will have military honors at Forest Rose Cemetery.
