The beacon on the family farm has gone out. David William Landis passed on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at the age of 86. He died with his boots on as he wished, just one year shy of his 75th crop year, which was a goal. Even though he was not enamored with school, he served his family and community well. He was president of the Liberty Union FFA and the 1955 Senior Class. He received his American Farmer Degree and was an All-Ohio football player for the 1954 Liberty Union football season.
He married Rosie Marie Sayre, the cheerleader, and had 3 new sons/farmhands by the time he turned 21. He was active in the National Farmers Organization, participating in the Milk Holding Action and Meat Holding Action, doing his part to raise the awareness of the farmers’ plight and farm gate price of commodities. When Dave turned 29, he took on the nickname ‘Ole Man’ and he fondly remained the ‘Ole Man’ to all.
Through his farm gates, fields, and barns passed many high schoolers and young people as part of baling, milking, and field crews. All of whom are remembered and thanked for their efforts to make the farm successful.
He was predeceased by his mother and father, James L. and Delphia Landis; his wife of 68 years, Rose Marie Sayre; granddaughter, Jamey Lynn Landis; and numerous aunts and uncles.
David is survived by his sister Marilyn Wooster and her children and grandchildren; three sons, David Jr. and wife Marlene, James and wife Tammy, and Thomas and wife Laura. Grandchildren include David Landis III, Katie (Gus) Jerew, Robert (Kendra) Landis, Jimmy Landis, JoDel Landis, Lesley (Rick) Landis, Charlie (Beth) Landis, Holly Landis, and Betsy Landis; great grandchildren Will, Whitley, Kaelyn, Robert Paul, Katara, Jimmy, Jon, Haleigh, Sarah, Josiah, Jake, and Jaxon.
Dave recently attended The Family Church of Pickerington. Caring Cremation® has taken place through the JOHNSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, BALTIMORE, OHIO. A private graveside service will take place at a later date at Union Evangelical Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Union Evangelical Cemetery to help with the perpetual care of the cemetery at PO Box 45, Baltimore, Ohio 43105 in his memory.
