Daniel C. Davies, age 67 of Hideaway Hills Ohio died July 19,2019 at his residence. He was born to the late William and Maxine Schilling Davies on March 26, 1952 in Columbus. He was an investment manager who enjoyed clearing brush, maintaining his driveway, traveling and fishing for the big one. His outgoing personality and love for life will be missed by all.
Daniel is survived by his wife of 35 years Kristi Davies; siblings Jeff(Laura) Davies, Scott(Cathy) Davies, Sue Ellen (Pat) DeVille and Lori(Frank) Dinsmore, Lauren, Matthew, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and numerous friends including Lou(Wendy) Williott, The Hilligans, the Hillard, Groff and Vander Kolk families.
Dan graduated from Whetstone High School in 1970 and Franklin University in 1974 with a degree in Tax Accounting. He went to work for Motorists Insurance in Columbus in 1974 in the accounting department. He was shortly offered a position in the investment department and that turned into a long career in investments ending at J.P.Morgan Investments when he retired in 2007. He never lost his love for tax accounting and looked forward every year to donning the eyeshade and sleeve protector to do their taxes! Dan and Kristi were great travelers, by plane, train, car and SilverSea cruise ships. They sailed all over the world and visited almost every island in the Caribbean, Canada, Scandinavia, Russia, Europe. Africa, Singapore, Thailand, South and Central America, South Pacific, New Zealand, Australia, the Galapagos Islands and much of the US including Alaska. The only continent not visited was Antarctica.
When he and Kristi weren’t traveling Dan could be found in Canada one week a year fishing for the ever elusive trophy Pike or Walleye. It began when Tim and Jeff Groff, Mark Manion and Dave Pettit, and later, Lou Williott started to make annual trips to Canada to fish. These trips were as much fun as anyone can imagine a group of knuckleheads could have for a week alone in the wilderness. Over the years, the group thinned for various reasons, but Dan and Lou continued to go to Canada annually. From Ontario to Manitoba, they searched for a perfect spot, and finally found a remote spot called Bolton Lake. This was home for the last seven years. It was a beautiful lake a couple hundred miles from the Hudson Bay in N.E. Manitoba. They had just finished their 25th trip together on July 7, 2019, but next years trip was already planned. The fishing was spectacular, and Dan caught many trophy fish under the guidance of friend and guide Marcel Driscoll! He will be missed by all at the camp.
Dan was all things Buckeyes and was looking forward to watching Ryan Day school Harbaugh this year!
Dan and Kristi were married in Chicago in 1984 and lived there for 3 years. They moved to Columbus in 1987 and lived in German Village until 2011. They built a log home in Hideaway Hills and moved there in 2011. Hideaway Hills held a special spot in Dan’s heart. He spent most of his childhood summers enjoying the Hilliard family’s home in the Hills. He and Ric found their inspiration for songs on the porch at Kickapoo. The Dubonnets were formed from those inspirations with Tim and Rick. Dan played with the band from age 13 to 17. Dan loved the house and relished working on The Logs, cutting trees and keeping a watchful eye on the always challenging steep driveway.
Dan had friendships that have endured over his lifetime. He held his friends close. He will be missed terribly by all of us but we know that his generous spirit will live on in his donations after his untimely death.
Be kind and love each other every day to honor Dan’s memory.
