Charles W. "Chuck" Smith, 84, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at Fairfield Medical Center. He was born on September 21, 1931, in Ross County to the late Londis and Lucy (Null) Smith.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his brothers, Rodney, Willard "Bill", Art, and Ray; and his sister, Claris.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sisters, Mary and Betty; sons, Timmy (Ruby), James (Melody), Paul (Cathy), and Donald (Linda Plants); eight grandchildren, Melinda, Marcie, Theresa, Marcy, Jessica, Katie, Trevor, and Jarred; twelve great-grandchildren, Chad, Jessie, Justin, Harley, Adam, Mason, Maddox, Samuel, Morgan, Cayden, Knox, and Amelia; and several nieces, nephews, extended family; and his special K-9 companion, Baby.
A lover of auctions, baseball cards, the outdoors, and any item he could purchase for a dollar, Chuck was known for his career as a heavy-equipment operator with the Ohio Operating Engineers - Local 18, his time in the Army, and his ornery sense of humor. In addition, Chuck took every opportunity to travel with his sons to fish and hunt and he made it a priority to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, often having them join him at auctions across Ohio.
Along with his ability to precisely operate any backhoe, Chuck possessed a keen mechanical insight and talent in repairing almost anything that was broken. He could often be found in his garage, assisting in the repairs of the cars of family members or one of Mid-Ohio's ambulances.
Family and friends may gather on Sunday, February 21st, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Lancaster Moose Lodge, 1201 Sugar Grove Road, Lancaster, Ohio 43130 to share memories and celebrate Chuck's life. Per Chuck's request, cremation will take place with the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home.
