Charles William Schmeltzer, age 89 of Sugar Grove, passed away on December 16th, 2015 at Adena Hospital in Chillicothe. Charles was born on April 28th, 1926 in Hocking Co. to the late William and Frances Woods Schmeltzer. Charles retired as a Master Plumber and was a member of the Lancaster VFW. He was most proud of being in the Army with the 188th Para. Inf. 11th Airborne. He was with the first group of Americans to occupy Japan after the War, always mentioning that he was there way before General MacArthur. Charles and his familiar quirks and ways of rigging things will be greatly missed by his friends and family. He is survived by his daughters, Evelyn Schmeltzer, Charlotte Potts, Shirley (Glenn) Williams, and Vicki Kozar; 8 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Charles was preceded in death by his wife, June Schmeltzer; daughter, Deborah Schmeltzer; and sister, Wilma Bradford. Family and friends may call on Monday from 4PM and 7PM at the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 10:30AM at the funeral home. The Lancaster VFW Burial Detail will follow with a committal service at Stuckey Cemetery.
