Charles E. Chuck Deeds, took his last flight with the Angels on December 26th, 2013.
Born to Lola (Bailey) and W. Elmer Deeds on January 24, 1937, in Sugar Grove, Ohio, he graduated in 1955 from Berne Union High School with honors. The next 11 year was in the Air Force where he became an F-100 Super Sabre pilot and was with the 417th Tactical Fighter Squadron in Ramstein, Germany and the 481st Tactical Fighter Squadron at Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, New Mexico. He proudly served his country, flying 129 combat missions in Vietnam. Chuck also received the Distinguished Flying Cross for steering his disabled aircraft from a populated area and bailing out at 800 feet.
In 1966 he was employed as a commercial airline pilot. He flew many types of airplanes, from the Boeing 707 to the 777, before retiring in 1997 from United Airlines. He was a Certified Flight Instructor, member of the Civil Air Patrol, and Fairfield County Pilots Association.
He retired to Sugar Grove, Ohio where working on his farm and taking care of his cows and other animals was his purpose in life. Having an airplane and runway on his farm, he enjoyed taking people for rides and teaching them to fly. He enjoyed making many pieces of furniture for his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the American Farm Bureau and Cattlemans Association. He served on the Fairfield County Health Board for Berne Township. While he was able, he spent time tutoring 4th grade math to Berne Union Elementary students.
He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Barbara; children, Teresa (Eric) Christopher, Charles (Amy) Deeds II, and John (Jackie) Deeds; grandchildren, Samantha Christopher, Jason Christopher, Daniel Deeds, Dawson Deeds, Matthew Deeds, and Emily Deeds; brother, Richard Deeds; sisters, Lois (Marvin) Ball, Virginia (Tom) Fogle, and Rebecca (Marshall) Grimes; brother-in-law, Robert (Marilynn) Weidner; sister-in-law, Mary Green; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Chuck was a member and served as an Elder at Emanuel Lutheran Church. Reverend Mark Raddatz will hold celebration of life services at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 231 E Mulberry St, Lancaster, Ohio 43130 on Monday, December 30, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Military graveside services will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery with the Lancaster Veterans Burial Detail. Visiting hours will be held at the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME, Lancaster, Ohio from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday and 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
The family would like to thank Our Family Home of Worthington, VITAS Hospice Care, FairHoPe Hospice, Doctors, Nurses, Caregivers, and all who comforted him through his illness.
