Betty Stokes

Betty L. Stokes, 87, of Lancaster, passed away Monday, September 1, 2014 at the Pickering House. She was born to the late, Glenn and Mary Tinker Meeder in Chicago on April 18th, 1927. Betty graduated from Upper Arlington High School in 1944 and was a 1949 graduate from the Ohio State University. She mostly taught 5th and 6th grade at West Elementary and Tarhe Elementary in Lancaster City Schools. She finished her career teaching language arts/literature for three years at Sherman Junior High. Betty had a love of reading and was a great golfer. She and her husband, George enjoyed their home on the shores of Lake Erie in Port Clinton for over 25 years, where wonderful times were shared with many family and friends. They also spent many winters in Florida near Bradenton, where they developed many friendships. The family would like to thank the many outstanding caretakers/health care professionals who worked in their home, Home Instead, Alternacare, and Main St. Terrace. The family would like to also acknowledge the wonderful care she received at Fairfield Medical Center’s ER and ICU, and at the Pickering House.
Betty is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, George K. Stokes of Lancaster; daughter, Sue (Tim) Lockwood of Lancaster; sons, Dr. George G. (Peggy) Stokes of Grafton, OH and Peter (Julie) Stokes of Port Clinton.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Frank Meeder; and nephew, Donald Meeder.
Caring Cremation® has taken place through the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME. A memorial service will take place on September 13th, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster at 1PM. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will take place at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery in Fremont. Memorials can be made in Betty’s name to either; First Presbyterian Church, 222 N. Broad St. Lancaster, OH 43130; Pickering House, 282 Sells Rd. Lancaster, OH 43130; or Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 1550 Old Henderson Rd. Suite N-160 Columbus, OH 43220.
