Alva "Gene" Azbell

Alva “Gene” Azbell, 84, of Lancaster, passed away on January 7, 2021 at Fairfield Medical Center, surrounded by his wife and family, after a brief illness. He was born on December 28, 1936 to the late Fred and Goldie Azbell. Gene was a retired tool and die maker by trade.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Evelyn Azbell whom he would have celebrated 65 years of marriage with in May; children, Connie (Steve) Berta, Barbara (David) Baughman, and Paul (Lisa) Azbell; grandchildren, Ryan (Sarah) Berta, Megan (Ash) Boytar, Matthew (Stephanie) Baughman, Craig Baughman, Travis (Mindy) Baughman, Rachel Azbell, and Jenna Azbell; great grandchildren, Ashlyn, Carter, Chase and Emma Berta, Maya and Molly Baughman, and Hazel and Benjamin Baughman; brother, Larry “Bud” (Patty) Azbell; sister, Virginia “Ginny” Bontrager; and many nieces, nephews, good friends, and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his five brothers, three sisters, and parents.

Gene was a 50 year member of the Carroll Lions Club. Gene and Evelyn loved spending time together working jigsaw puzzles, spending time in their yard, sitting in their lawn chairs in the garage, and spending their pennies at the casino. Their greatest joy together was watching their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren’s activities.

A funeral service will take place at 11 AM in the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL 405 N. Columbus St., Lancaster, OH, 43130 on Monday, January 11, 2021. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Visitation will take place from 4-7 PM on Sunday, and one hour prior to the service. A live stream of the funeral service will take place on the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home Facebook page.  In accordance with state mandates, COVID protocols including facial coverings and social distancing will be followed.
